Credit Card Counseling - A Helpful Option In Many Cases Of Debt

Anyone can seek credit card counseling once they are dealing with credit card debt.

Credit card counseling is the process of offering educational services to credit card holders.

These educational services are aimed at educating credit card holders and others that borrow money about how to avoid incurring debt that cannot be repaid. In many cases, this is during bankruptcy.

Credit card counseling services will generally offer debt management plans to those in credit card or other forms of debt.

The credit card counseling service will usually negotiate debt management plans with creditors. A debt management plan will help the person in debt to repay his or her debt by working out a payment plan with the credit card issuer.

A debt management plan set up by a credit card counseling service will typically offer reduced payments, fees and interest rates to the credit card holder.

After the credit card holder starts receiving credit card counseling, the credit card issuer will lose the customer’s credit card account and the account will be restricted from incurring any further charges.

A debt management plan with a credit card counseling service allows the credit card holder to consolidate multiple monthly payments into one monthly payment. This monthly payment is often times much less than the sum of the payments initially made by the credit card holder.

Credit card issuers will accept lower monthly payments from cardholders in credit card counseling programs rather than cardholders that are not. Often times, a debt management plan from a credit card counseling program can cut monthly payments by 50 percent. The majority of monthly payments will reduce by at least 10 to 20 percent.

With a debt management plan from a credit card counseling service, interest rates will lower significantly.

A customer who has defaulted on a credit card account will be repaying the credit card balance with very high interest rates.

A credit card holder enrolled in a credit counseling program can receive reduced interest rates at 5-10% APR.

Some credit card issuers will even eliminate interest if a cardholder is receiving credit card counseling.

Credit card counseling services allow a credit card holder with a delinquent account to bring that account current. Often times when you enroll in a debt management program and make a few on time payments, the creditor will change the status of your account to current.

In addition, your credit card account will reflect a current status on your credit report. Credit card counseling and debt management programs give a credit card holder a fresh start in repaying debt that was once unmanageable. For many, credit card counseling is the first step in rebuilding a positive credit history.

While most credit card counseling services are ethical and very helpful to those in debt, some can provide poor services. It is very important to make sure the credit card counseling service you work with is reputable. Some counseling services will charge excessive fees and provide very poor debt management services.

Often times credit card counseling services provide poor services because they hire employees that are not trained in credit counseling. The person helping to manage your funds may not have formal training in financial management other than the training given by the credit card counseling service. It is very important that you do your research when considering receiving counseling for credit card debt.
